Job Opportunity: Cinema Center – Executive Director

Cinema Center is currently seeking to fill the position Cinema cntr logoof Executive Director. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position with benefits, including health.

The Executive Director is responsible for the long-term sustainability and growth of Cinema Center, fundraising, and providing a vision for the organization’s path to success through community-driven artistic programming.

Responsibilities of the Executive Director are:

Finance and Development 

  • Chief fundraiser and fund development facilitator
  • Draft annual budgets and present to committees and board
  • Review monthly financial statements and report to finance committee and/or board
  • Assist in preparing the monthly financial statement, the annual audit, and the filing of tax forms
  • Research, write, and submit grant proposals; attend workshops and information sessions related to submitting proposals
  • Write and submit interim and final reports on grants
  • Work with staff and board on preparing all financial information

Operations and Administrative

  •  Assist board and committee meetings for Cinema Center
  • Assist the Board by maintaining and distributing meeting notices, minutes, and other documents, as needed
  • Maintain current files and perform other duties related to organizational administration
  • Approve weekly film and special event schedule drafted by Director of Operations
  • Introduce screenings for events
  • Facilitate internships

Programming and Outreach

  • Research potential programming, including working with community partners to book specialty films and series
  • Establish and maintain relationships with distributors; negotiate film rental rates and book films
  • Promote Cinema Center programming and events through local media outlets
  • Establish and maintain relationships with other arts and nonprofit community partners
  • Attend relevant community events and meetings; act as advocate of Cinema Center
  • Respond to questions and issues raised by the community regarding Cinema Center or its programming
  • Implement film education initiatives
  • Work with local filmmaking community and promote screenings of their work


  • Participate in and assist with the work of committees in planning, organizing, and implementing Cinema Center events
  • Assist with the recruitment of new board and committee members, as needed
  • Work with Arts United to maintain and improve facilities

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

  • A love and familiarity with Cinema Center, and its mission
  • At least 5 years in management, preferably at a successful nonprofit arts organization
  • Experience working with a dedicated board of directors
  • Extensive experience fundraising, especially regularly generating major gifts greater than $10,000
  • A proven track record of expanding the financial resources for an organization and developing new relationships with promising fund development leads, donors, community organizations, local businesses and potential partners that translate into sustainable revenue-generating ventures
  • Experience researching grant opportunities and ability to be a strong written communicator through grant proposals
  • Ability to spearhead all sponsorship procurement, including major sponsorships for annual Hobnobben Film Festival
  • Ability to draft annual budgets, with board and committee input, as well as review monthly financial statements
  • Experience as a public speaker and comfort in being the “face” of an innovative arts organization that routinely pushes the envelope of film art programming
  • Able to negotiate all programming arrangements with film distributor partners, managers and agents; maintain these important relationships so Cinema Center is in the best position for procuring excellent, artistic, revenue-generating programming
  • Experience creating and implementing a calendar of year-long programming, including special series, events, late-night screenings, and discussions with community leaders, and filmmakers that not only strengthen the organization’s commitment to its mission but also create important streams of earned revenue
  • Working knowledge of current independent film world, trends, and programming available to Northeast Indiana community
  • Carry on current investments and projects, including but not limited to conversion of the organization’s Spectator Lounge into a second screening room and securing the sale of real estate in organization’s possession
  • Ability to program a successful independent movie theater in an increasingly challenging landscape, sometimes with little more than a couple days’ notice
  • Preferable to have some familiarity with the current theatrical art house and film festival landscape

Education:  At least a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in film, nonprofit management, or business.

About Cinema Center: Cinema Center is a 501(c)3, film arts organization with more than 40 years of service to the Northeast Indiana community. The organization operates a year-round, first-run independent movie theater, as well as produces the Hobnobben Film Festival every year on the downtown Arts United campus, in June.
