Librarian Love

Here’s something fun for your Monday morning – your librarian offers a little tribute to you, our wonderful patrons.

You really do lift us up! So says Lettie in this “Meet the Staffperson” post on the Allen County Public Library blog.

Meet the ACPL Staff! This month’s featured staffperson: Lettie Haver
January 28, 2013 by Mary

Nearly a year ago, we started a new feature on this blog, profiling an ACPL staffperson each month. Using a variety of serious and silly questions, we hope to share with you the diversity of the Allen County Public Library’s staff. Which brings us to…

Ten Questions with Lettie Haver:

Lettie and a few of her favorite people.
Lettie and a few of her favorite people.

Lettie and a few of her favorite people.

1. What do you do at the Library, and how long have you been doing it?

I have been the librarian at the Paul Clarke Nonprofit Resource Center for five years.

2. What is the favorite part of your job?

I love connecting my patrons to their information needs, and giving them the space to have that need heard is a good part of that.

3. Have you ever been in a food fight?

I would like to be in a food fight. On the streets! Can you imagine that?!

4. Eating out or eating at home?

My husband wins the prize for best chef! From simple oven fries to the best salmon, seafood chowder, or Indian curry, he’s good! So, at home. If we don’t want to bother, we like to pick up carry out, say a pizza from the Acme, or a sushi roll from Asakusa.

5. What makes you happy?

Breathing and moving is how my yoga teacher puts it! I like yoga for helping me clear myself out, to start to settle my mind, but I’m struggling to develop anything that can be called a practice. In general, I find a thousand happinesses in so many things around me. I try to pay attention to what brings me joy and just find that the subject multiplies.

6. Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions?

I’m working on making all of my decisions with my heart and head in sync. I have faith that I’ll get there, if not this year, and if not every decision.

7. Do you have any pets?

Sophia Eliane Auden Frank Haver-Meyer-Torres is our sweet dog. She was actually a gift from another library staff member who was expecting a baby and already had a dog. Sophie is sweet with us and in short, amazing, oh, and gorgeous! It’s funny, she stops traffic when she’s hanging out in front of our house. It’s not unusual to hear people take a breath and gasp, “That’s a good-looking dog!” We’re lucky.

8. What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?

I don’t know how to say this, but the answer a lot of the time is “Pretty much the job I have.” I find myself serving in places – rooms with community leaders – where I feel uncomfortable regularly. Happily, I have connected with enough people over time that I know, beyond a doubt, that most people will extend grace to my social awkwardness, and many people feel similarly. I am lifted regularly by the people I serve!

9. Do you like gardening?

I love gardening! I don’t know much about it, I don’t do it with my mind, so to speak, I’m sort of the lucky fool in most areas of my life and this is one that I love stumbling through! I just like growing things! And playing in dirt. I am quite proud of the compost bin my husband built for us! And this year, I’m hoping to install at least one rain barrel.

10. Who was your favorite teacher? What was s/he like?

My second grade teacher was my favorite elementary school teacher – and she’s actually the sister of my first boss here at ACPL. Small world, full of fun people, who are probably related.

We hope you enjoyed meeting Lettie through this profile. Let us know what you think of this feature. (And if you’re an ACPL staffperson and would like to volunteer to be featured on the blog… email me, we’ll see what we can do!)
