Above Board

Succession Planning

More than once a board member has come into the Paul Clarke Nonprofit Resource Center asking what their board can do because they are concerned about their executive director.

Maybe the board just wants to prepare for the inevitable, whether that be the CEO moving on, retiring, or heaven forbid, dying in office.  Whichever it may be this subject is often very difficult to initiate with an executive director.

Unfortunately, not addressing succession planning may result in a crisis which could leave the board of directors scrambling to post the position immediately, and temporarily fill-in while interviewing potential candidates. Not the best scenario.

Don’t let this happen to your organization. Be sure your organization has a succession plan in place.  The sooner the better.
